Automated deployment tool

Hello fellow members.

First, forgive me if this isn’t the correct forum to be asking this.

I’ve been asked by management to come up with a process to automate SQL Server releases for our BI team directly from TFS so that us DBA’s can focus on more important tasks rather than doing 10-30 manual releases a day (it gets cumbersome). I know that there is a way to deploy SQL code directly from TFS but that unfortunately isn’t an option, nor is a third-party source such as Red Gate for example. It needs to be home grown. The scripts would consist of new table creations, drop and create stored procedures, inserts etc.. I’m trying to come up with a design in my head on how I want/need this to work. My first thought of approach would be to build a table in which our BI team would insert a record to the TFS path they wish to deploy and build an SSIS package that runs every 15min and deploy. Obviously, I need to account for error reporting, deployment status monitoring etc. etc. In the long term I would like to build this with a web front end so that manual inserts by out BI team wouldn’t be necessary, but that will need to wait until v2.0, so for now it will most likely be manual inserts, I think.

So my question is, does anyone know of online examples you can point me to that could give me some design ideas, or better yet offer any suggestions on other ways how to approach this?

Thanks much!
