What is the best way to extract and load data from a source table to a destination table via a Linked Server

So our 3rd party data is on a whole different VM than our report source data and Report Server. I have been tasked to extract some of the 3rd party source data on a different VM and create what our DBA is calling "A kill-n-fill flat table"...I'm not really sure what he means by that. Is the best way to approach this via like a "Staging" Table? Like extract from our 3rd party data source to a "Staging" Table and load the destination table from the "Staging" Table? I think I'm actually going to have to use a Physical "Staging" Table because the SSIS will go across Linked Servers and I won't be able to use a Temporary Table. The whole idea here is to get pieces of the 3rd party data touch points onto our VM Report Server so ultimately the SSRS Report won't take FORVER going across a Linked Server.

Please let me know your thoughts and any insights you may provide.

Thanks for your review and am hopeful for a reply.
